How to Reduce Deadhead Miles and Protect Your Trucking Profit

A truck can stay busy and still lose money. One of the fastest ways that happens is through deadhead miles—the miles driven without a paying load. Every empty mile still uses fuel, adds wear, consumes driver hours, and moves the truck closer to its next maintenance interval. The goal is not simply to book more freight. It is to build a route that earns well from pickup to pickup.
Start With the Whole Route
A professional dispatcher looks beyond the rate on the current load. Before accepting freight, evaluate where the truck will deliver, what the outbound market typically looks like, the distance to the next likely pickup, appointment times, and the driver’s available hours. A strong rate into a weak area can become an average load once the empty repositioning is included.
Compare loads using the total miles required to complete the move, including the drive to pickup and the likely repositioning after delivery. This creates a more honest view of revenue per mile.
Use Better Load-Planning Habits
Build several options before calling the carrier. Look for reloads near the delivery area, identify backup markets, and avoid waiting until the truck is empty to begin searching. When possible, schedule the next load before the current one delivers. Early planning gives the dispatcher more negotiating power and reduces rushed decisions.
Keep a simple lane history that tracks rates, wait times, reload availability, tolls, and seasonal changes. Over time, this becomes a decision-making tool that is more valuable than chasing a single high-paying load.
Communicate Before Problems Grow
Dispatchers should confirm pickup numbers, appointment windows, equipment requirements, and driver availability before finalizing a load. Clear communication prevents avoidable detours and missed appointments that can create extra empty miles. If the market changes, update the carrier quickly and explain the options in dollars, time, and risk.
Build Dispatch Skills That Produce Results
Reducing deadhead is a repeatable system: research the market, calculate all miles, plan the reload, communicate clearly, and document the result. Dispatch Training Center teaches practical dispatch strategies for real-world freight operations.
